Traditional Religion

Yeve Cult
Yeve is a form of a traditional religious belief of the people of Dzodze. The practitioners are called Yeveshie with their places of worship(yevekpor) in almost every division of the town. the practitioners of this cult believe that by worshiping this they are protected from all evils.

People become practitioners of this religion through several means such as; people who by birth are destined to worshipping this cult. The sec nd group of worshippers are made up of people who in search of remedy for their predicaments have committed themselves to worshipping this cult. The third group is however is made up of people who have been given in to the shrine by their families as a means of paying the cult back for favours received from the shrine.

In the past, these shrines served as training schools for learning for members. A lot of lessons including a peculiar language(yevegbe) was also taught new entrants in which they(followers) communicate.

Those who refuse to heed the call to join the cult are severely dealt with. According to Midawo Sofahu Agbalekpor, the person in charge of the Midawoga Denyo's shrine, the cult visits punishments on those who rejects the cult with severe punishments from epidemics to thunder strike which cannot be cured by anybody until the individual rescind his or her decision not to belong to it.

In most cases the practitioners are distinguished from other people through facial marks given them on their cheeks as a sing of belonging.

Stool House
Another feature of traditional religious belief among the people of Dzodze is the maintenance of stool houses. These houses are buildings in which the ancestral spirits of a particular clan are kept and they can be seen in almost every home in Dzodze. This is for the remembrance of the ancestors. Special stools are carved as a symbol to represent the ancestors and are adored. Members of a particular clan tell the stools what their needs are and it is believed that it is done by the ancestors.

There are special days for offering prayers to the stools and these days are 'Domegbe'. We believe our ancestors go to market on market days so prayers are not offered on those days. Market days fall after every four days. A member of the clan is appointed as a chief priest (Adenua) in consultation with the ancestors and serves as an intermediary between the people and the ancestors. Drinks are used to offer prayers to them. One can vow to them for

solutions for example in times of difficulties. Example, bearing a child, prayers can be offered to the gods and by one's belief it is done.
